Tides and Eclipses-

Introduction

A tide is the movement of water that rises and falls according to the moons pull on the ocean. A tide can change the depth of the oceans, and rivers that lead to an ocean. Eclipses are where a celestial object moves in front of another. The two types of eclipses are Solar Eclipses, and Lunar Eclipses.

What Causes Tides?
Tides are formed by the gravity exerted on the water by the moon. The water that is closest to the moon at a certain time has a larger tide, than those farther away. But, if the m

oon is facing the opposite side of the earth from where you are, then you also have high tide when the other side of the earth has high tide. The closer you are to the moon the more dramatic your tides will be.

Eclipses

What Causes an Eclipse?
Lunar Eclipse: A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon, the earth, and the sun are all
parallel with each other. And the sun blocks the sun from getting to the moon, turning it a reddish color.
Solar Eclipse: A solar eclipse occurs when the new moon orbits in between the sun and the earth, and the moon blocks the sun so the earth becomes dark, and you can only see the wispy gases of the sun framing the moon. Types of Eclipses- There are two kinds of Eclipses, Solar Eclipses, which is where the

where the moon the earth and the sun are all in a parallel line allowing the shadow of the earth to cover the moon turning it reddish (see right). But there are other types of Eclipses. There are:
- Total Solar Eclipses- where the moon blocks out the sun.
-Partial Solar Eclipse- where you can still see part of the sun because the moon does not block out all of it.
-Annular Solar Eclipse- where you can see the edge of the sun all the way around the moon. This is like a partial solar eclipse except instead of having a sliver of sun on one side, it has a ring around the entire moon.
- Annular/Total Solar Eclipse- This is like a Total Solar Eclipse, and a Annular Solar Eclipse in one. In the beginning the Eclipse is Annular and then as it progresses it becomes Total and the towards the end it becomes Annular again.
-Total Lunar Eclipse- The is where the sun, earth, and moon are all in a parallel line that allows the earth to block the sun from getting to the moon which turns the moon a reddish color.
-Penumbral Lunar Eclipse- this is where the moon partially passes through the shadow of the earth.
-Partial Lunar Eclipse- this is when the moon passes through part of the earths shadow known as the umbra.

Revolution and Mythology of the Moon (Part of Tides and Eclipses)- Revolution-It takes the moon about 27.3 days to orbit around the earth. This is called a sidereal month. It takes the moon 29.5 days to arrive back at the same point it started its rotation from. This is called the synodic month. It takes the moon longer to return to the spot where it started from because of the rotation of the earth around the sun. Mythology-
For thousands and thousands of years the moon has been an object of wonder. The moon has been associated with dreams and sleeping, death and the afterlife. The moon is also associated with love, and beauty. Because the moon waxes (grows) and wains (shrinks) it has become a symbol of time and change. Some peoples such as the Mexican Aztec's, believe that the moon is a "man eater" and that at night it goes around trying to find victims to consume. Not all cultures thought that the moon was evil. The Greeks believed that the moon was the home of the dead, along with the Hindu's who believed that souls of their dead would go there to wait for rebirth. Most of the time the moon is thought to be female. In many cultures she is matched with the male sun. In other cultures though, the moon is male, and the sun is female. Some religious and other groups see pictures in the moon, such as 'the man in the moon', it has been said by the Romans that there was a man holding sticks on his back "carved" into the moon. Other cultures say that there are rabbits, turtles, and other animals carved into the moon as well. There are many, many myths about the moon as well. One Native American one says that the moon and the sun had kids, which are the stars, and that the sun catches and eats them. And while the sun is sleeping the moon comes out and plays with them. And once a month the moon becomes dark to mourn the kids that the sun caught. Another Nigerian myth says that the sun and moon lived on earth. And that one day their friend Flood came to see them. Flood brought so many animals and water that sun and moon had to jump into the sky to make room for all of the animals. Conclusion- In conclusion both tides and eclipses have been a very interesting topic though out history. Eclipses provide us with unbelievable beauty and we can see the celestial magic that surrounds us. Tides provide us with entertainment, whether its looking at tide pools, or watching poor tourists get stranded, they allow us to enjoy time by the water and help us understand how gravity works. Both Tides and Eclipses are interesting and wonderful, for both entertainment, and science!
